Improving Your Home Environment
At the onset of global warming issues, it is important for every one of us to do our part in taking care of our homes to better take care of our environment. Without meaning to do so most of us damage the environment. The cleaning products in our kitchens, bathrooms and even beauty products contain contaminants and pollutants, all hurt the environment and our energy usage sucks up precious resources. The best way to start making a change for the better is to assess the energy efficiency with an energy audit and contaminants inside our very own homes.
Some common household pollutants and contaminants include;
- Pesticides
- Fertilizers
- Solvents
- Grease
- Oils
- Degreasers
- Gasoline
- Antifreeze
- Strong Detergents
- Oil Based Paints
- Stains
- Thinners
- Herbicides
- Batteries
- Ink Cartridges
Improving the Earth Inside Your Home
Sometimes, unused leftovers of these contaminants and pollutants are kept for a long time causing them to leak. Often, these liquid products are thrown away in the trash or poured out in the drain. Most of us are unaware that these liquids go directly into the nearby creek or stream. There is also the issue of the effects that these products have on indoor air quality as many of them release toxins into the air as well. The best way to discard these products is to properly read the instructions and labels on how to store and discard them. These simple steps can go a long way in saving the earth and its resources.
Pollution is such a major concern and it seems to be getting worse as we progress into the next century. There are many sources of pollution that we must be aware of so we can do our part to find solutions for the problems. One of the serious problems that must be addressed not is air pollution, which is caused by the release of chemicals into the air.
Common air pollutants include;
- Carbon Monoxide
- Chloroflourocarbons (CFCs)
- Nitrogen Oxides produced by industries and motor vehicles
- Cardon Dioxide
It’s of extreme importance that we reduce the amount of these pollutants that are being released in our air. And studies have shown the indoor air quality of our homes is as bad or worse than the air outside. Using more efficient air and heating systems that circulate air from the outside in and vice versa will help improve your home’s indoor air quality. Another cheaper and quicker fix is to open the windows and doors whenever possible in lieu of simply running a cooling system. Not only will this circulate the air in your home for better ventilation but it will also help reduce energy consumption as well.
SAVING ENERGY
Another way we can take care of the environment is by saving energy right inside our homes. The first step in preparing to save energy especially in the winter is to find out where you are losing energy and therefore money. An energy audit can be conducted in homes, apartments, multi-family homes, and small businesses. You can do an energy audit on your own or have a professional do it for you. It is basically an inspection, analysis and survey of energy flows in your house. The inspectors will recommend ways and means on how to save energy without compromising your safety and comfort. In the long run, this will save you money and energy by conducting an accurate energy audit, which will significantly benefit the safety of the environment.
RECYCLING
One of the most important processes taking place around the world, as far as environmental protection is concern, is recycling. It basically involves processing used materials into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials. It is also an important component of waste management as it reduces the amount of garbage that goes to landfills. Recyclable materials include plastics, glass, paper, metal, textiles and electronics.
These materials are recycled into similar products although sometimes this can be expensive. There are usually collection centers available in your state as well as curbside pick up. These materials are then sorted, cleaned and then reprocessed into new products and materials. Every city and state have different recycling programs so it’s important for one to do some research at how these programs work.
There has been an immense growth of awareness around the world as far as going green is concern. A good number of ‘going green’ groups have emerged in our attempt to save the earth. The best step is to educate yourself, perhaps join a group and be pro-active. After all, the cliché will always remain true, we only have one earth and one shot at life and we have an option to take care of it or be in serious danger later on.
