Welcome to EnviroTools, your personal guide to involve your community
in the cleanup of a polluted site. To help answer the question:
"How do we clean up this mess?" we have assembled
a collection of educational materials on Superfund and Brownfields
sites, along with sites cleaned up under state programs. EnviroTools
contains presentation visuals, fact sheets, web links, a glossary
and an annotated bibliography of other outreach resources, all designed
to help you cut through the confusion and jargon of site cleanup
projects.

Who
is this site for?
The EnviroTools materials are aimed at community assistance leaders,
outreach assistance providers and citizen leaders. Through the Internet,
we provide easy access to the materials in a form that can be distributed
to communities. Many of the materials are written for folks who have little
or no background in site cleanup, and all of the materials have been "pilot
tested" through community assistance carried out under the EPA-funded
TOSC and TAB
programs.
Who we are?
The developers and the affiliated scientists of this site do not have
a vested interest in the outcome of any particular site needing cleanup.
Because of this, the information here contains less bias that might exist
in stakeholders of a particular community.
EnviroTools is being produced at Michigan State University.
This is a collaborative effort between the outreach arms of the Hazardous
Substances Research Center (HSRC)
and the Superfund Basic Research Program (SBRP).
The Hazardous Substance Research Centers (HSRC) program
provides free technical assistance to communities with environmental contamination
programs. Their web pages provides
links to the five centers throughout the United States.
The Hazardous Substances Research Center (HSRC)
at Michigan State University is one of five HSRCs established by the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency to provide free technical assistance to
communities with environmental contamination. The HSRC
at Michigan State University is one of the universities of the Midwest
Hazardous Substance Research Center (MHSRC).
This center focuses on basic and applied research, technology transfer,
and outreach related to site contamination. The outreach programs of the
HSRC include: Technical Outreach Services for Communities (TOSC)
program and Technical Assistance for Brownfield communities (TAB).
Both provide local educational assistance to citizens and communities
with contamination and redevelopment concerns. The TOSC effort focuses
on helping communities with Superfund problems whereas TAB focuses on
communities with brownfields redevelopment issues. The Midwest Hazardous
Substance Research Center is a consortium involving the Purdue
University, Michigan State University,
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
and Kansas State University. The information
in these pages was written by scientists and outreach specialists at Michigan
State and others at the 27 HSRC centers around the United States.
The Superfund Basic Research Program (SBRP)
provides funding to 17 programs at 69 universities and institutions around
the United States. The goal of the SBRP is to study the human health effects
of hazardous substances in the environment, especially those found at
uncontrolled, leaking waste disposal sites. The SBRP is funded under the
National Institute for Environmental Health Science (NIEHS).
